National Citizen Service

National Citizen Service

The flagship project will provide a programme for 16 year olds to develop the skills needed to be active and responsible citizens, mix with people from different backgrounds, and start getting involved in their communities.

It will take the form of an five week programme to take place during the 2011 summer between June and August. It will consist of two separate residential weeks followed by a social action project to be run by participants in their own communities.

What does NCS involve?

The programme involves young people in a local area coming together in teams (usually teams of 15). While young people can go along with friends, teams will also be a chance to make new friends and meet people from different backgrounds.

Introduction

- a chance to find out more about the programme

Getting to know you

- an initial event or series of sessions where you can meet staff and volunteers, can have fun and get to know one another.

Away residential

- 25th - 29th July PGL Windmill Hill Sussex combining outdoor activities and challenges, designed to be challenging but fun and to help the team learn how to work well as a unit. Other NCS teams are also likely to be at the residential centre, so there will be more opportunities to meet new people.

Home residential

    - a second week which is also residential but at a venue close to home. This week will be a chance to learn new skills and put these to the test, and to find out more about the local area.

Social action week

    - a final full-time week where teams meet and consult with local people, test out ideas, decide on a social action project that they will carry through for the rest of their time on NCS, and plan for this.

Social action project

    - involving young people in spending time to carry out your teams social action project. This can be at the evenings and weekends, or whatever time works best for those involved.
