New £80K healthy living scheme offers cut prices sports and activities

A MAJOR new healthy living drive is offering people the chance to take part in sports and fitness activities from just 50p.

Basildon Council and NHS South West Essex are due to launch an £80,000 scheme offering cut-price leisure activities to improve people's health.

The pioneering Get Out There scheme is designed to tackle obesity and help people of all ages stay fit.

Residents can choose from more than 50 activities including sports, drama, dance, cooking, music and arts. Those who take part in 10 activities will receive a £10 voucher from Asda.

Paul Brace, cultural services manager for Basildon Council, said:

"We have put together an exciting range of discounted sport and activities for people of all ages and abilities.

"The scheme is aimed at encouraging families, young people and children to stay healthy through exercise.

"All the activities have been heavily discounted, which will help people feeling the pinch from the recession.

"We hope this scheme encourages people to keep fit and helps them to improve their health and well being."

Families are being targeted with a range of activities they can enjoy together, including swimming, table tennis, badminton and football coaching.

Young people can try dodge ball, trampolining, basketball and the Brazilian football craze, Futsal.

There are also multi-sport sessions for youngsters including football, kwick cricket and badminton.

Other activities in the line up include street dance, DJ workshops, junior gym sessions and swim fit.

For more information see the Get Out There brochure available from council leisure centres and the Towngate Theatre.

The Get Out There scheme is being launched at Asda in Pipps Hill on Saturday 2 May at 1pm where two chefs will be serving up healthy food to shoppers.
