BASILDON Councils Get out there! project has forged links on a national level after being given Street Mark status.
Get out there! was awarded the status by national charity, Street Games, for its work in getting young people and families fit and healthy across the district.
Street Games quality assure the provision of activity and meet the minimum standards for high quality community sport required by Sport England and the sport unlimited programme.
Now that the Get out there! project has the Street Mark accreditation it will be allowed to carry the Olympic Inspire Mark logo on some promotional material.
Councillor Kevin Blake, cabinet member for Leisure and Arts, said: "The project has only been running just over a year and is already starting to have a significant impact on the health of the local community. The links the award has with Street Games and Sport England will hopefully inspire others from across the district to participate.
Get Out There! was launched in May 2009 with a target of improving health and lifestyles in Basildon by promoting participation in sport and healthy eating.
A further aim of the project is to improve social cohesion and reduce crime.
The programme currently offers and promotes over 50 activities a week around Basildon for all ages and abilities such as badminton, kids trampolining, boot camp training and gym sessions.
Get Out There! also offers bike hire from Gloucester Park and countryside activities like conservation and nature discovery walks.
Currently there are 40 scheduled activities taking place per week which will increase to 50 by the summer of 2010 with an average participation rate of 300 people per week.
