YOUNG people keen to beat the boredom and get active during the summer holidays are invited to Gloucester Park this weekend for the SX Urban Games.
The event, hosted by the Bald MC, will be taking place between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 28 August in Gloucester Park. It will see a variety of urban alternative sports ranging from skate boarding and bmx'ing to basketball.
As well as opportunities to get involved there will be a wealth of performers showcasing their skills. Demonstrations, workshops and competitions will also take place throughout the day with a three on three basketball competition run by Essex Pirates and Wickford Knights with guest appearances from the BIG Fen Street Team with prizes to be won. Colin Nell Freestyle footballer will also be showcasing his skills and will be on hand to teach people a trick or two.
Residents of all ages are invited to come along to the free event. Play Rangers will be on hand to provide fun for younger visitors whilst music lovers will be catered for by the boom room which will feature local's bands and Kayzar street dance crew will be their throughout the event.
Come and try sessions also include archery and the new and upcoming rock-it-ball the latest up and coming craze. Mountain boarding lessons will also be up for grabs courtesy of Ride the Hill. Inflatable multi-sport pitch, cage football and basketball bungee will also be on site all day.
The event which has been running in various locations around the county is aimed at attracting new audiences to sports whilst highlighting the 2012 games.
Councillor Andrew Baggott, cabinet member for Communities, said: The Urban Games has been a big hit across the County so we are looking forward to hosting it in Basildon. With only two years until the Olympics it is important to promote them and the values that they stand for and this is a great way of getting the local community involved.
Councillor Kevin Blake, cabinet member for Leisure, added: This is going to be a fun packed day for everyone involved and I am pleased that such an event is being hosted here in Basildon which is fast becoming the sports hub of Essex.
Jointly organised by Basildon Council and Sport Essex the event has been awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark, meaning it has been recognised as an important event in promoting the forthcoming Olympics.
