Basildon Rises to the Challenge
Officials today confirmed that residents of Basildon this year raised over £10,000 for the Sport Relief charity.
The Sport Relief Mile which took place close to the new Sporting Village site at Gloucester Park earlier this year saw hundreds of friends, families and workmates take on the challenge of completing either one, three or six mile courses.
Now following verification from the Sport Relief charity it has been confirmed that £10,943.60 was raised for the charity.
Councillor Kevin Blake, Cabinet member for Arts and Leisure said: "I would like to congratulate the residents of Basildon for getting together to support this charity and raise such a large amount of money. The Sport Relief charity do fantastic work to support disadvantaged people and it is great that the borough has the opportunity to be involved in raising money for them. I would also like to congratulate the Phoenix Stiders Club who provided volunteers on the day and were vital to its success".
The Sport Relief charity helps disadvantaged people across the UK and the rest of the world and every penny raised in Basildon will go directly to the people they assist.
Work is underway for the 2012 event and dates will be announced shortly.
