Tap-a-thon world record attempt at Pitsea Leisure Centre
A GROUP of dancers will be toe-tapping their way into the record books as part of a charity tap-a-thon being held at the Council's Pitsea Leisure Centre next month.
Professional dancer and teacher Leighanne Phillips, 30, will lead the Guinness World Record attempt in aid of Children in Need on Sunday 10 October.
The aim of the attempt is to get more than 7,596 people doing the same tap dancing routine at the same time. Leighanne's pupils will be among thousands across the country tap dancing their routine to the music of Lou Bega's Mambo No. 5.
Leighanne, of Rippleside, Basildon, said: "When I heard about the world record attempt I thought it would be a great opportunity to give my pupils something to work towards.
"I would like to thank Basildon Council for donating the venue for free and I hope dancers of all ages and abilities will come and join in. Everyone is welcome."
Basildon Council, which owns Pitsea Leisure Centre, has donated the use of the venue for free and all those who wish to take part will be asked to donate £10. £5 of the fee will go directly to Children in Need and the other £5 will go towards a t-shirt.
Councillor Kevin Blake, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Arts, added: "I'm delighted we are able to play our part in this Guinness World Record attempt by offering our facilities for free.
"Children in Need is a very worthy cause and I wish all those involved the best of luck in achieving the record."
All ages and abilities can take part. Those interested much register by Friday 24 September. To find out more visit www.theperformersproject.com.
Leighanne, who is affiliated with the International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA), runs adult dance classes all over the district.
