On your bike!
CYCLING fanatics are being encouraged to get on their bikes this February and take part in a bike race around Gloucester Park.
Basildon Council, Essex Roads Cycling Club and British Cycling have teamed up to deliver a special Mountain Bike race course in Gloucester Park.
Taking place on Thursday 24 February at 10am the race is aimed at children between the ages of 8 and 16 and is part of British Cycling's Go-Ride Racing programme.
Councillor Kevin Blake, Cabinet Member for Leisure and the Arts said: "Cycling is one of the best ways of getting fit and by incorporating some competition into the event we hope to see plenty of young people come along and give it a go."
With several age categories ranging from u10's to u16's riders can bring along their own bikes or a limited number will be available to hire for free on the day.
Competitors are advised to bring along a change of clothes and shoes and helmets will be compulsory for all riders
Mark Wyer, Go-Ride Coach for British Cycling said: "There will be lots of tricky corners, fun descents and muddy sections to test the bike skills of the young riders".
The event is one of many taking place during the February half term as part of Basildon's Cycling Festival supported by Sustrans, Basildon Council, the Eastgate and Everyone Active.
Other activities and cycling attractions taking place that week include a Cycle Polo Competition , BMX stunt show, Doctor Bike (fix your bike for free), Cycling lessons for all ages, and a win a bike competition
